Whimsical Wednesday

4 Flames

Welcome to Whimsical Wednesday my Fellow Book Dragons. Tonight’s Gem is dark, like an onyx, no yet polished, but tumbled. We can see the shine about to break through, the lighter lines there pulsing Hope. This is “The Unexpected Life of Harry Chambers” by Gem Maker S.D. Reed.

This is the tale of one Harry Chambers, it is almost Twilight Zone-ish in it’s presentation of poor Harry. He is the good guy, the nice gent, the one who makes everyone laugh and smile while he is slowly dying inside. Dying of loneliness, misery and the mental and emotional abuse heaped upon him by his Aunt Angie. She is an aging Bi-Polar mess who has raised Harry since his mum died when he was four months old. Was Angie always like this? No, otherwise Harry would be an utter, blubbering mess rather than the charming, loving teaching assistance he is. She was once a lovely person herself, but Time marches on and in Angie’s case it not only marched but stomped.

Harry is a Teaching Assistant for troubled children and he’s extremely good at it. His physical needs are few, his emotional needs are great (if he ever allowed himself the time to think about himself). He loves Drama, Acting, poetry, literature and music. He loves his students and most of his co-workers. But Harry does have one need, one dream, one thing he longs for of his own: America. He wants to get there desperately. And thanks to one of his coworkers he finds that dream maybe easier to attain than he thought.

I really liked this book. It was fun seeing a Harry Potter-like adult character start to come into his own without a magic wand. I like Harry, I understand Harry. I think there is a bit of him in all of us at some point in our lives. S.D. Reed’s writing is quite imaginative, and his conversations quite realistic. He understands his characters. No one is over the top here, no one is too over or under done (well perhaps some of you will think Aunt Angie is, unless you have been with someone with a mental illness who refuses their meds), even side characters are fun. I was disappointed though when he went where every writer who wants to be seen as ‘relevant’ and ‘cool’ goes to these days – he made people who support Donald Trump or people who were some type of nasty person a supporter of Donald Trump. It’s really tedious and tiresome. It’s becoming stereotypical and is below what so many talented people can do, but seems to be the first place they go, especially people from outside the U.S.

At any rate, don’t let that put you off. If you are in the mood for a book that has a protagonist that makes you want to root for someone ..this is the book for you! You’ll be rooting for Harry as I am. I can’t wait for the next installment to come out. It is only sale for a very reasonable price on Amazon now and if you have Kindle Unlimited it’s FREE! If you have Amazon Prime it is only $2.99 to by it which is $10.00 off the list price!

Be watching tomorrow for my latest Author Spotlight and I will be posting a new Question tomorrow as well! Until then, I remain, your humble Book Dragon,

Mystery Monday

5 Flames

Hello My Fellow Book Dragons! Welcome to Mystery Monday, hope everyone is doing well. I would like to take a moment and recognize our Essential Book Dragons! You all make such a difference everyday to everyone of us! Please know you are appreciated!

Our Gem this evening is small, but powerful. It is carved from what looks to be a piece of Unakite, green, mottled with pink spots and is in the shape of a key. This one was held on to very tightly, as though the person were trying to squeeze every last drop of energy from it for you can see how worn it is. It was given to me by a grey haired private detective who said it was found under a window sill in a ladies restroom of a courthouse. This is Gem Maker and Dragon Feeder Mustang Patty’s “Innocent For the Moment: Book II of the Jill Adair Trilogy”.

Yes, Jill is back and just as not sane as ever! She has worries galore and they are more than just how to get her former defense attorney to notice her. I reviewed Book I “Guilty Until Proven Innocent” a few months ago. If you haven’t read it yet, you really must, because as for as tasty and delightful as that one was, this one is an absolute FEAST!

Back are Jill Adair, woman wronged, her highly handsome and competent attorney Tom Sorrell, Jill’s husband Derrick, and Tom’s great team at the law firm. There are also some new faces…scary, creepy, but definitely new and you will love getting to know them. This one has that touch of Noir that I love so much.

New faces include a handsome, smart, young detective and a pretty receptionist who lights up Tom’s office. She is a godsend and Adele, Tom’s office manager is finally able to do the things she is really capable of. But there is always the threat of Jill casting a pall over everything.

If you have read Book I, go now, my good Book Dragons and get started on Book II and if you are new to this series ..get them both because I have a feeling Book III..the finale is going to knock our scales off!

Both I & II are currently available on Amazon for a very reasonable price https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Innocent+For+The+Moment+by+Mustang+Patty&ref=nb_sb_noss and “Innocent For the Moment” is currently FREE on Kindle Unlimited. Strike while this iron is hot!

Freakish Friday

5 Flames

Hello my Fellow Book Dragons! Come in, grab a cuppa and warm your scales by the fire as we admire this week’s Freakish Friday Gem. This Gem is blood orange and carved in the shape of a flame. Hold it, feel it’s angry pulse, as though madness lies deep within. Quickly, put it back in the box. I cannot display it for fear someone may be too tempted and try to take it and then disaster all round. This is Gem Maker Ruth O’Neill’s “Tell Me Why”.

O’Neill has the spark for telling a Psychological Thriller as though, rather than reading her book, she was sitting across from me, here, as you are, retelling her eyewitness account over a pot of tea. I could not take my eyes away and I had to read until I was finished. I had to know why?!? Why!?

This is the story of Lauren. Early 30’s, hard working, good mates, loves her job and on a weekend away meets what she believes is her dream man. Enter Max, handsome, sexy, kind, helpful, a teacher. He meets Lauren and they hit it off swimmingly. They meet over a dead body. Who doesn’t dream of such kismet?

Suddenly, just when everything is going oh so right, Max is accused of the dead man’s murder. Lauren spends half her inheritance freeing him. She believes in him. She loves him unendurably. Will they live happily ever after or will this Fire Gem burn them both.

This is a must read. It is not an easy read by any stretch of the imagination, I felt as if I were there. The pain, the torture, the terror. I cannot give many details or I give it all away and I do not want to ruin this for you. This is well worth the cost which is very reasonable I assure you. Ruth O’Neill is a name we will be hearing about for years to come. Get yours now.

I do want to remind you the April Giveaway is still going. I do realize I have not posted a question the past two days, but I will be posting one this evening and revealing another prize in the question!

Until tomorrow, I remain, your humble Book Dragon,

Drakon T. Longwitten

Throwback Thursday

5 Flames

Welcome my Fellow Book Dragons, to this week’s Throwback Thursday. Our Gem this evening takes us all the way back to the dawn of creation. This Gem is held in this ancient wooden box. The symbols are most likely not familiar to you, but the contents will be. It is an eye. A serpent’s eye. It changes colors and glitters in the light. You may see if for a moment, but for no longer, this is no ordinary serpent’s eye.. this is a replica of the eye of THE SERPENT. The one that tempted Adam and Eve in Eden and so brought the downfall of us all. This is Gem Maker Brennan S. McPherson’s “Eden”.

I loved this book. I have never liked Biblical Fiction that takes itself too dogmatically. For one thing a 1 to 10 minute passage in the Bible cannot be written about fictionally in 1-10 minutes. Artistic license is certainly going to be key. But Historical Biblical Fiction is different and McPherson shows us why. He used only one source and that is the Bible. He does something I greatly appreciated, he explains how he wrote the book, based the book and at the end explains his rationale and invites readers to send him their kudos and complaints and is willing to change things if he believes the argument is warranted.

But what I loved most about this book is that McPherson’s characters are NOT plaster saints. They do not regret what they have done and spend 200 pages trying to rectify it. They get confused, frustrated, upset, gripe, snipe, snap and argue with each other. This Adam and Eve feel real. In everything from being created in the Garden of Eden to being forced into the wilderness to 600 years later when Adam is sitting by a bonfire talking to Enoch.

If you, too, love great biblical fiction, get this one.. or if you are just introducing someone to Biblical Fiction, this is a great series to start with. Until tomorrow I remain, your humble Book Dragon,

Drakon T. Longwitten

Whimsical Wednesday

5 Flames

Welcome my Wonderful Wyverns to Whimsical Wednesday. Our Gem this evening is not one Gem, but a bag of assorted stones of all shapes and sizes for all types of uses: healing, strength, support, dreaming. This is Gem Maker Carolyn Brown’s “The Banty House”.

Carolyn Brown has taken the lovely memories of her own grandmother’s stories and gift of storytelling and given us the gift of this tale. A tale of three elderly sisters who love each other deeply and unbreakably. Kate, Connie and Betsy have been raised by their Mama in the Banty House. Mama wrote the rules they live by decades earlier when, to make a living for herself and her three daughters, she turned the large home in Rooster, Texas into an upscale brothel called “The Banty House”. She had named it for the men who came their, acting like little Banty Roosters, cocky and strutting.

Mama had ever only loved one man, being herself, a quarter black, she knew he could not keep his job and so refused to marry him, but loved the three daughters she had by him ferociously, she made sure they grew up to be good hearted women. The story of Mama is a lovely one in and of itself, for this my dear Book Dragons, the book should be read, but there is so, so much more.

The Sisters go each week to have their hair done at a salon and Connie goes out to have a cigarette when she meets a shy young woman on the bench outside. She is young, skinny and very pregnant. Connie looks her over and they talk for a bit and she decides there and then that Mama’s Rule #1 needs to be exercised: “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have show hospitality to angels without knowing it.” Heb. 13:2

The Sisters agree and take her in. What should have been for a day or two turns into a week. This book is at it’s heart, a love story. Not a romance, although there is romance in it. No, my Fellow Book Dragons, a love story. Love between sisters, strangers, friends and others. It is one of the most beautiful, funny, interesting books I have ever read.

If you are feeling down, discouraged, depressed or even bored at this point, this book is for you. It is coming on the market May 26th, 2020. You can pre-order it now. I would suggest doing so, because this is going to fly from the shelves!

Make sure you are also answering the daily question! I will be revealing another item in the basket in the next 48 hours so be paying attention! Until tomorrow, I remain, your humble Book Dragon,

Drakon T. Longwitten

Tea Time Tuesday

5 Flames

Welcome to Tea Time Tuesday, my Fellow Tatsus. Today’s Gem comes in the form of a beautiful book mark. Golden with a single highly polished Lapis Lazuli connected by a silken thread. This is Gem Maker Ellery Adams’ “The Secret, Book & Scone Society”, it is the first in a series.

I loved this tale. Four women, connected only because they live in the same small town of Miracle Springs, North Carolina. Three own their own businesses, the fourth works for a local business. All four have secrets, love to read and all four mind their own business, literally and figuratively.

Miracle Springs is not your typical small town, it’s sleepy and peaceful. A place where people go to heal. There are healing hot springs and businesses built around those. A bakery where the Hester the Baker will listen to you for a bit and then bake you a scone to help heal your soul. A bookstore where Nora will listen to your cares for a bit and then suggest a book or three to read, not because some self-help book will help you throw away the pain, but as Ellery so eloquently puts it…”A way through. The stories had shown her that the only way to escape the pain was to pull it closer. To let it burn her like a second fire.” Listen to that! That is prose, my Book Dragons! Sheer poetry!

There are also Estelle and June who do their “magic” as well. I loved these women. They become friends. They form, after the death of a kind and lonely stranger, The Secret, Book & Scone Society. They become a force to be reckoned with. I believe you will fall in love with them as well.

The four fast friends become even more determined to fight against the dead man’s scheming property development company after one of their own becomes involved in another death. Do not miss this book. I cannot wait to read Adams’ second book in the series “The Whispered Word” and you won’t be able to either. The audio version of The Secret, Book & Scone Society is currently available for FREE on Amazon!

Get yours today! Until tomorrow, I remain, your humble Book Dragon,

Drakon T. Longwitten

I received a copy of this book from #KensingtonMysteries and #JackieandAngelasBookReviews as part of this books tour. My opinions, as always, are my own.

Mystery Monday

5 Flames

Ahh… another Mystery Monday is upon us my Fellow Book Dragons! We have a rather dark Gem this evening. A beautiful coral bracelet. Deep cobalt blue. Beware! Look but do not wear! The moment you put it on you become a target for cartels. You become a target for Death! This is Dragon Feeder Jeanine Kitchel’s “Tulum Takedown”. The second in her Wheels Up series!

Layla is back, this time she’s on the run trying to rescue a reporter’s niece from a rival cartel. And the action is even faster paced, more dangerous and crazier than ever! Jeanine has once again placed us in the heart of the Yucatan. We are going from the cities to the jungles and back again. Riding in Porsches to pickup trucks. This is fiction ripped straight from the headlines! Kitchel once again delivers her masterful story-telling for our benefit!

If you love Noir and want a book that carries you away from Los Living Room to places like Mexico City, if you are tired of staying indoors and want beaches, blue skies and thick, green vegetation, if you are fed up watching the news and want to see handsome young men and beautiful women, this is the book for you!

It’s on sale now everywhere great books are sold. Don’t miss out and it’s currently FREE on Kindle Unlimited! Until tomorrow, I remain, your humble Book Dragon,
